Creating the email you want to send

Here are some examples of campaigns which have been run. Amongst them you will find some good, some not so good and some brilliant email Creatives which have been sent.

What makes a good email Creative ?

(1) The email is clear and easy to read
(2) It combines text and graphics with more text than graphics
(3) It quickly "tells" the reader
* WHO the email is from,
* WHAT the email is about
* WHERE to get the products
* HOW the reader will benefit (eg discount etc)

What makes a "bad email" Creative ?

Here are some things to look out for;

1) Crappy looking website

Linking to Bad looking or poorly designed websites kill more sales than you can imagine. Get your site up to professional speed so that is is functional, looks good and is easy to navigate. Need Help?

2) Way too much content

Remember that most people have a job and read emails at work so keep the content down so that they do not need to absorb too much excessive information up front.

3) Cryptic messages (remember KISS)

Many companies often include too much JARGON or "in house" expressions. Remember that there are lots of people who know the basics but do not know nor are they interested in the mechanics of the product. eg: Most people who buy a car have no idea how they work...

4) Tiny text (too many companies go with small almost unreadable text)

If your text is smaller than this then you will lose sales. Also try and keep Black ON White. It is easier to read for all age groups. Make your text either 12px or 9pt (CSS) or VERDANA FONT SIZE 2 for normal HTML tags. NEVER use EM'S (CSS) as in FONT-SIZE: 0.7em;

5) Too many images/pictures (makes the email load very slowly)

I have seen some campaigns with graphics which are close to 200k to download. (1) Someone with a slow 56k modem will often stop the download. (2) It can blow up your monthly bandwidth usage in a day (3) There is no need for it (4) Usually much more costly to develop than a text based advert with some graphics.

Remember that not everyone has 20/20 vision and a lot of people get tired eyes after looking at a monitor all day so make your text either 12px or 9pt (CSS) or VERDANA FONT SIZE 2 for normal HTML tags.

Many people are stimulated by specific Keywords.

The words people re-act to are called "POWER" keywords. This means that by using POSITIVE ACTION WORDS you will be able to tap into the consciousness and subconscious of potential customers and stimulate them into action. These "POWER" keywords are simple everyday words which people will understand completely.

To implement "POWER" words, you take what you feel would be the most common words and phrases that a person is easily able to relate to, which often provokes an emotional state in the reader and <embed> these POWER keywords throughout your Creative in such a way that it makes the reader WANT TO buy your product.
